WASHINGTON, July 13, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — US President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States would reinstate a blockade targeting Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and charge other commercial vessels 20% of their cargo value for passage.
“The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“We are reinstating the THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so named because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait,” he said.
Trump repeated that the United States would become the “guardian” of the strategic waterway and said commercial shippers would be charged to compensate Washington for securing it.
“The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as ‘THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,’ but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped,” Trump said.
He said the charge would cover costs associated with providing security in the strait.
The announcement follows earlier comments in which Trump said the United States would guard the Strait of Hormuz and seek payment for placing American personnel at risk.
