RIYADH, February 3, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, once seen as the heir apparent to Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed, sources close to the family and his lawyer Khaled el-Zaydi said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not immediately clear, the report said.

Despite holding no official position, Saif al-Islam was long viewed as one of the most powerful figures in Libya under his father’s four-decade rule, shaping policy and mediating sensitive diplomatic missions.

Reuters cited his role in talks on Libya abandoning weapons of mass destruction and in negotiating compensation related to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988, as well as his engagement with Western governments while portraying himself as a reformer.

Educated at the London School of Economics and a fluent English speaker, he later took a hardline stance during the 2011 uprising, Reuters reported, citing past remarks in which he warned of bloodshed and vowed to fight in Libya.
