RIYADH, June 11 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority announced on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz would be closed until further notice, citing the exchange of fire with the United States.
The authority, which was established last month to oversee a new transit protocol in the waterway, linked the decision to tensions created by U.S. military action in the region and an announcement by Iran’s armed forces.
Applicants who had received transit permits were instructed to await further guidance from the authority.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also announced that the strait would be closed to all vessels after the United States launched fresh strikes on Iran on Wednesday.
U.S. Central Command rejected the Iranian claim and reported that commercial ships continued to transit in and out of the strait.
The IRGC denied the U.S. assessment.
Iran had previously maintained that the waterway remained open only to ships coordinating passage with Iranian authorities, while the United States warned ship operators not to cooperate with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
Visible traffic through the strait has fallen to an estimated 15% of pre-war levels, according to JPMorgan.
