RIYADH, April 1, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Iranian authorities warned Bulgaria last month not to allow the United States to use Bulgarian airports for planes involved in military operations in Iran, Bulgaria’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
Bulgaria confirmed receiving the diplomatic note but said it was not at war and that no combat aircraft were being loaded over Bulgarian territory to take part in military operations.
Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raikov told reporters that Bulgaria maintained diplomatic relations with Iran and that parliament had not approved support for military action in the Strait of Hormuz region.
Earlier on Wednesday, lawmaker Stanislav Balabanov presented a March 18 note in which Iran protested against U.S. military refuelling planes parked at Sofia’s Vasil Levski airport.
In the note, Iran said it reserved the right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security and national interests in accordance with international law.
Bulgarian authorities have said the U.S. aircraft seen at the airport in late February were part of NATO’s forward deployment, a point Raikov reiterated on Wednesday.
Some European countries, concerned about the war with Iran, have pushed back on U.S. military operations.
