Iranian Foreign Minister Travels to Doha for Ceremony Honoring Former Qatar Emir

DOHA, July 15, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Doha on Wednesday to attend a ceremony honoring Qatar’s former Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency.

Sheikh Hamad died Sunday at the age of 74, according to Qatar’s Amiri Diwan.

Araghchi’s visit comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Qatar following repeated Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting Al Udeid Air Base in retaliation for US strikes.

One of the Iranian attacks took place on the day the former Amir died.

Qatar played a central mediation role in US-Iran negotiations that produced the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June. The agreement has since begun to unravel following renewed hostilities.

It remains unclear whether Araghchi’s visit will include discussions aimed at restoring the ceasefire.

Before fighting resumed, US and Iranian delegations had traveled to Doha for indirect negotiations facilitated by Qatar.
