Kabul, September 9, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – An initial United Nations assessment found that the recent 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan destroyed 5,230 homes and damaged another 672 across 49 villages, with access to most affected areas still restricted, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

Shannon O’Hara, Head of Strategy and Coordination for OCHA in Afghanistan, said damaged roads in the country’s rugged eastern provinces have prevented aid workers from reaching the majority of the 441 affected villages. A series of aftershocks measuring between 5.2 and 5.6 in magnitude further complicated response efforts.

The quake, which struck on August 31, has so far killed at least 2,200 people, a toll expected to rise as more bodies are recovered. The UN estimates up to 500,000 people have been affected, more than half of them children.
