WASHINGTON, July 13, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — US President Donald Trump threatened further military action against Iran on Monday, accusing Tehran of abandoning an agreement and declaring that the United States would guard the Strait of Hormuz.
“We hit them very hard last night. Every time they send a drone, we hit them very hard,” Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox News.
Trump claimed Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement before Iran withdrew from it.
“But we had a deal. What nobody knows, we had a deal. It was a done deal, and then they broke it,” he said. “We’ve had 10 deals with these people, and so we’re just going to hit them very hard.”
Trump did not provide details about the agreement to which he was referring.
The president also said the United States would assume responsibility for guarding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
“Now we’re going to guard it, and we’re going to get paid for guarding it,” Trump said.
He said Washington would expect reimbursement because the operation would place US personnel at risk.
The comments followed an increase in US military strikes against Iran over the weekend.
