MUSCAT, July 14, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — A tanker reported being struck by a missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz along the southern route near Oman’s coastline, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said Tuesday.
The incident was first reported to authorities on Monday and occurred 13 nautical miles, or approximately 15 miles, southeast of Limah, Oman.
UKMTO said the attack was under investigation.
The report followed a separate incident in which another tanker said it was struck by an “unknown projectile” approximately 40 nautical miles, or 46 miles, northeast of Qalhat, Oman.
“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the maritime authority said.
The incidents come amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies typically pass.
Iran said overnight that it had struck two “rogue supertankers,” claiming the vessels had ignored warnings from Iranian authorities.
