Romania Says It Is Not Party to Conflict After Iran Remarks on U.S. Airbases

BUCHAREST, March 16, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Romania said on Monday it is not a party to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, after Tehran suggested that allowing the United States to use Romanian airbases could amount to participation in military action.

Romania’s foreign ministry said in a statement that a bilateral access agreement signed with the United States in 2006 provides the legal framework for U.S. forces to use military bases in Romania.

“Romania is not a party to the conflict,” the ministry said. “Our priority is the diplomatic effort for de-escalation, for which we have advocated since the first day of the conflict.”

The statement came after Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on Iranian television that if Romania allows the United States to use its airbases, it would “certainly amount to Romania’s participation in the military aggression against Iran.”

“Such an action is completely unacceptable under international law and would entail international responsibility for the Romanian government,” Baghaei said, adding that Iran would respond “appropriately in legal and political terms.”

Romanian officials said the agreement with Washington has been in place for nearly two decades and governs the presence and activities of U.S. forces on Romanian territory.
