PARIS, May 31 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Israeli troops seized Beaufort Castle and its strategic ridge in southern Lebanon, the military said on Sunday, marking a major advance against Iran-backed Hezbollah despite a ceasefire announced more than six weeks ago.

The Israeli military said the operation focused on taking control of the Beaufort Ridge and the Wadi al-Saluki area while targeting Hezbollah infrastructure on the ridge.

One Israeli soldier was killed, the military said.

There was no immediate comment from Lebanon or Hezbollah.

The advance came after one of the heaviest days of Hezbollah fire toward northern Israel since the April ceasefire, prompting school closures and restrictions.

The Israeli military said Hezbollah had carried out numerous attacks from the ridge and that hundreds of projectiles had been launched from the area toward Israeli civilians and soldiers.

The capture of Beaufort Castle gives Israeli troops an overlook point across parts of southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

The military said Israeli troops were also operating near Nabatieh, a major Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon.
