Iran Sends U.N. Letter Over Reports of Assassination Threats Against Top Officials

UNITED NATIONS, March 27, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Iran sent a letter to the United Nations on Thursday over reports that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf had been considered targets for assassination.

The letter, signed by Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, referred to media reports indicating that the two officials had been spared for the time being as negotiations to reach a ceasefire in the war continue.

“The reports indicate the existence of an operational framework contemplating the assassination of the highest-ranking political officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the letter said.

It added that the conditional nature of the reported “suspension” showed that the threat remained real, deliberate and ongoing.

Iran described any such programme as “state-sponsored terrorism.”

The letter came as indirect exchanges between Tehran and Washington continued, with Pakistan leading the channel and Egypt and Turkey providing support.
