RIYADH, June 11 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - India called on the United States to stop attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after three Indian seafarers were confirmed dead following a U.S. strike on an Iran-linked oil tanker.
India lodged a strong protest with Washington after the attack on the MT Settebello, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a press briefing on Thursday.
Jaiswal stressed that the welfare of India’s seafaring community was a priority and that the attacks must stop.
India’s Foreign Ministry Secretary Aseem Mahajan confirmed that 28 crew members were on board the MT Settebello, including 24 Indian nationals.
Twenty-one Indian nationals were rescued, while three were killed.
U.S. Central Command reported that a U.S. aircraft fired precision munitions into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from American forces.
Mahajan also reported that another commercial vessel, the Guinea Bissau-flagged MT Jalveer, came under attack off Oman’s coast on Thursday with 20 Indian crew members on board.
All Indian crew members aboard the MT Jalveer were reported safe.
