UAE Approves AstraZeneca Breast Cancer Therapy Etcamah

ABU DHABI, June 11 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - The Emirates Drug Establishment approved AstraZeneca’s Etcamah, making the UAE the first country in the world to make the treatment option available.

Etcamah is an oral targeted therapy for a subset of patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer who develop an ESR1 gene mutation during endocrine therapy.

The treatment is used in combination with a CDK4/6 inhibitor and is based on camizestrant, a next-generation oral selective estrogen receptor degrader and full estrogen receptor antagonist.

The therapy works by blocking and degrading estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, which can contribute to tumour growth and spread.

The approval followed a scientific and regulatory assessment by the Emirates Drug Establishment, including reviews of quality, safety, efficacy and clinical data.

The decision was based on findings from the Phase III SERENA-6 trial, which showed statistically and clinically significant improvement in progression-free survival among patients who developed the mutation while receiving endocrine therapy.

Emirates Drug Establishment Director-General Dr Fatima Al Kaabi said the approval reflected the efficiency of the UAE’s regulatory framework in evaluating pharmaceutical innovation through scientific standards.

Sameh El Fangary, Gulf Country President at AstraZeneca, said the availability of the treatment in the UAE was an important step in expanding treatment options for breast cancer.

The Emirates Drug Establishment also stressed the importance of early detection, adherence to prescribed treatment plans and regular follow-up with healthcare professionals.
