CNN Obtains Draft U.S.-Iran Memorandum With No Explicit Strait of Hormuz Reference

WASHINGTON, June 17 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - CNN obtained a copy of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire memorandum from a U.S. official, though it remains unclear whether the wording matches the version expected to be signed on Friday.

The memorandum does not explicitly mention the Strait of Hormuz, despite the waterway becoming a central issue in negotiations.

It provides for vessel traffic between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to return to prewar levels within 30 days, without directly addressing the future status of the strategic oil and gas chokepoint.

U.S. officials have rejected claims that the agreement gives Iran control over the waterway, while Tehran maintains that it will continue to regulate transit and collect fees.

CNN reported that the wording leaves the future status of the strait open to interpretation.

The memorandum includes an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and Iran’s pledge never to obtain a nuclear weapon.

It also provides for immediate U.S. sanctions waivers on Iranian energy exports, the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iran, and a U.S. commitment to eventually lift all sanctions against Tehran.

The future of Iran’s nuclear program and its near weapons-grade uranium stockpile is left for future negotiations.

The memorandum also makes no reference to Iran’s support for regional militant groups or ballistic missile activity, despite earlier U.S. statements that those issues would be addressed.
