PARIS, June 25 — Angelina Jolie said she turned personal pain into performance for the French film Couture, in which she plays a filmmaker diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Academy Award-winning actor plays Maxime Walker, a fictional American filmmaker producing a film connected to a Paris Fashion Week runway show when she discovers she has breast cancer.
The film is written and directed by Alice Winocour and is based on personal experiences.
Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of breast cancer at the age of 56. Jolie underwent a double mastectomy in 2013 after learning she carried the same genetic mutation as her mother.
Jolie said the film made her think often of her mother and how meaningful such a story could have been during her illness.
The actor also described the vulnerability of filming scenes linked to diagnosis and treatment, including a moment in which surgical markings were placed on her chest by an oncologist.
Alongside Jolie, Couture follows Ada, played by Anyier Anei, a model struggling with the pressures of the fashion industry, and Angele, played by Ella Rumpf, a make-up artist trying to leave the fashion scene and become a writer.
Jolie said she hopes the characters’ stories connect with audiences by showing shared human experiences of fear, change and resilience.
