DUBAI, September 15, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa said Syria’s economy could reach about $50 billion in 2027 as the country seeks investment, expands the role of the private sector and moves through its political and economic transition.

Speaking at the opening of the Arab Media Summit 2026 in Dubai, Al-Sharaa said the economy had once been valued at around $60 billion before falling to approximately $20 billion prior to the current administration taking responsibility.

It reached $32 billion in 2025 and could return to levels last recorded in 2010 by 2027, he said.

Al-Sharaa also said the economy could grow to $200 billion by the end of the next decade if stability is maintained across the region and internationally.

He linked Syria’s economic outlook to its move towards a free-market model and stronger support for the private sector. Some measures introduced during the transition could require patience before their effects become clear, he said.

Al-Sharaa described the lifting of U.S. sanctions under President Donald Trump as a turning point that removed constraints on the country and opened the way for development. Syria had previously been one of the world’s most heavily sanctioned countries, he said.

Investment from the United Arab Emirates is already supporting the country’s economic recovery, according to Al-Sharaa. He cited DP World’s investment in the Port of Tartus and its connection with Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port as an example of Syria’s potential role in regional trade routes.

Further discussions are under way on additional UAE investments, while investors from the Gulf and Europe have also shown interest in opportunities in Syria, he said.

Al-Sharaa said Syria’s location, human capital and economic potential could allow it to pursue an independent path while working with Arab and Islamic partners and drawing on successful regional models.

He also identified agriculture as a potential source of growth and regional food security. Syria could produce enough food for between 70 million and 75 million people using its existing capabilities, he said, with modern agricultural technology potentially raising that figure to more than 100 million.

Regional stability would be essential to those economic ambitions, Al-Sharaa said. He added that Syria was consulting Arab partners on ways to limit the effects of conflict and reduce future risks.

The Syrian president delivered his remarks during a session moderated by media presenter Ammar Taqi. The summit’s opening was held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
