Riyadh, Sept 22, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Palestinian cause has remained at the center of Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy for nearly a century, with successive Saudi kings affirming the Kingdom’s commitment to the Palestinian people’s rights and to the establishment of an independent state.
Since the early 20th century, the conflict has shaped the Middle East, beginning with increased Jewish immigration under the British Mandate and the failure of the 1947 United Nations partition plan. The issue has since led to successive wars and remains central to regional stability.
Saudi Arabia has consistently upheld the Palestinian cause as a priority. King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud supported Arab forces in the 1948 war. King Faisal bin Abdulaziz framed the issue within an Islamic context, initiating the 1969 Rabat Islamic summit after the Al-Aqsa Mosque fire. King Fahd bin Abdulaziz proposed a peace plan in 1981, which became the Arab Peace Initiative endorsed at the Fez Summit in 1982. King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz advanced the Arab Peace Initiative at the 2002 Beirut Summit and launched funds to support Jerusalem and affected Palestinian families.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud reaffirmed the Palestinian cause at the 2018 Jerusalem Summit in Dhahran, pledging $150 million to support Islamic endowments in Jerusalem and $50 million to UNRWA. The Kingdom continues to stress the Palestinian right to statehood within the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In recent years, Saudi diplomacy has focused on mobilizing international consensus for the two-state solution. In September 2024, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah announced the launch of a global alliance for its implementation, calling on countries to recognize Palestine. The Kingdom welcomed the UN General Assembly’s 2024 resolution granting Palestine eligibility for full membership and hosted the alliance’s inaugural meeting in Riyadh, emphasizing accountability and timelines for establishing a Palestinian state.
Saudi Arabia, alongside France, co-chaired preparatory meetings for the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine in 2025. The conference’s final document, adopted on July 28, called for an end to the war in Gaza and outlined economic and humanitarian initiatives to empower Palestinian institutions.
On September 12, 2025, the UN General Assembly adopted the New York Declaration in support of the two-state solution, backed by 142 countries. Saudi Arabia welcomed the resolution as a strong reaffirmation of international consensus.
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, said on September 10 that the Arab Peace Initiative has become a widely recognized international framework for peace. He stressed that Saudi efforts have significantly increased the number of countries recognizing Palestine and mobilized unprecedented global support for the two-state solution.
The Kingdom reiterated that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is the cornerstone of regional security and stability. Saudi Arabia renewed its call for peace-supporting nations to join the global alliance dedicated to this cause, reaffirming its historic, political, and humanitarian commitment to the Palestinian people.
