Saudi Arabia Highlights Arab Group Concern Over Illicit Small Arms Trade

NEW YORK, June 2 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Saudi Arabia highlighted the Arab Group’s growing concern over illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons, citing its security, humanitarian and economic consequences, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The statement was delivered before the United Nations by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., Abdulaziz Alwasil.

Alwasil stressed the importance of the Programme of Action as a consensus-based U.N. framework for combating illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and strengthening cooperation among states.

He said the programme should remain a standalone international framework and that its implementation should not overlap with other mechanisms that do not enjoy broad consensus.

Alwasil also underscored the importance of international cooperation, technical assistance, technology transfer and national capacity-building in implementing the programme.

Saudi Arabia called for continued study of the impact of modern technological developments on efforts to address illicit small arms trafficking.
