Oman launches diplomatic push to curb escalation between US and Iran

MUSCAT, July 27, Saudi Arabia Breaking News – Oman launched a regional diplomatic initiative on Monday aimed at finding a political solution to the military conflict between the United States and Iran as drone attacks against Saudi Arabia raised concerns over further escalation.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi held separate telephone calls with his counterparts from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt.

The discussions focused on reaching “practical, fair and sustainable understandings” through political and diplomatic channels, according to Oman’s Foreign Ministry.

The ministers also addressed the security of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to restore the uninterrupted movement of international trade and global supply chains.

Oman’s initiative followed Saudi Arabia’s interception of several drones launched from Iraqi territory and targeting oil facilities in the Eastern Region and Riyadh. The Saudi Defense Ministry attributed the attacks to Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

Qatar, Kuwait and Oman condemned the attacks and expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

Iraq announced on Monday that it would investigate the Saudi findings. The inquiry will examine evidence and information provided by the Kingdom, but Iraqi authorities did not identify any suspected group or provide a timetable for the investigation.

Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq have previously carried out drone and rocket attacks against US military bases and other regional targets, including in Saudi Arabia.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi told US President Donald Trump during a meeting earlier in July that his government would confront Iranian-backed militias. He did not publicly outline how the government planned to carry out that commitment.
