Modi Tells Putin Ukraine War Must End for Humanity’s Sake
BISHKEK, September 1 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the war in Ukraine needed to end for humanity’s sake and that India would continue supporting efforts to stop the fighting.
"Every day that the war continues, humanity is, in effect, set back a step, whilst every step towards peace gives all of humanity real hope for peace. We need to move from endless war to an end to the war, to a cessation of hostilities. And we will need to move precisely in this direction," Modi said at the start of talks with Putin in Bishkek.
‘As you are aware, India supports all peace efforts in this regard, and we shall continue to do so in the future’, Modi told Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, according to a Kremlin transcript.
Modi called Putin ‘my friend’ and welcomed growing economic relations between India and Russia. He said bilateral ties were guided by the need to place the interests of both countries above all else.
"Thank you very much, Prime Minister. We are moving forward along this path," Putin responded, according to Russian state media.
The Kremlin said after the talks that Putin briefed Modi on the progress of what Moscow calls its special military operation in Ukraine, the state-run TASS news agency reported.
The Kremlin has repeatedly said Russia is prepared to end the war only on its own terms. Ukraine has rejected those terms as an unacceptable demand to capitulate.
India and China are among the largest buyers of Russian oil, helping Moscow replenish its budget after it sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in 2022 and was subjected to sweeping Western sanctions.
