Riyadh, March 3, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Iranian media reported the Strait of Hormuz was closed and that Iran would fire on any ship trying to pass.

About a fifth of global oil consumption moves through the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz lies between Oman and Iran, linking the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea beyond. It is 21 miles (33 km) wide at its narrowest point, with shipping lanes about 2 miles (3 km) wide in each direction.

More than 20 million barrels a day of crude, condensate and fuels moved through the strait last year on average, according to data from Vortexa.

OPEC members Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq export most of their crude via the strait, mainly to Asia.

Qatar, one of the world’s biggest LNG exporters, ships almost all of its liquefied natural gas through the strait.
