RIYADH, June 28 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Iran said a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon must be part of any final agreement with the United States, as fighting continued to strain the tentative U.S.-Iran agreement.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied Lebanese areas was necessary to reach a final and lasting agreement that would establish regional stability.
Iran also called for the full implementation of the first clause of the memorandum, which requires an end to Israel’s war and military operations against Lebanon.
The first article of the memorandum of understanding signed earlier this month calls for the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
The final deal would confirm the permanent end of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, but the memorandum does not explicitly require the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
Israel has repeatedly refused to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, citing the ongoing threat from Iranian-backed Hezbollah to communities in northern Israel.
On Friday, the Israeli and Lebanese governments agreed on a process for the Lebanese military to gradually take control of zones in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese military has so far been unable to force Hezbollah to disarm or withdraw its fighters from southern Lebanon.
