Iran allows vessels carrying “essential goods” through Strait of Hormuz, state media says

PARIS, April 4 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Iran has granted permission for vessels carrying essential goods to transit the Strait of Hormuz toward Iranian ports, state-run Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday.

The report said the order covered vessels heading to Iranian ports or currently operating in the region, according to a document cited by Tasnim.

The document, attributed to Houman Fathi, deputy for commercial development, said the measure applied in particular to ships carrying basic commodities and livestock inputs.

Tasnim said executive bodies had been instructed to take the necessary steps, in line with issued protocols, to facilitate the passage of such vessels through the waterway. A list of ships prepared to transit the strait would be sent for coordination, the report added.

It was not immediately clear how Iran defined essential goods or whether broader restrictions would remain in place for vessels from countries Tehran considers hostile.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, carrying about a fifth of global oil consumption.
