Hong Kong, September 25, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Hong Kong resumed flights on Thursday after a 36-hour suspension as the city reopened businesses, transportation, and some schools following Cyclone Ragasa, the world’s most powerful tropical storm this year.
Ragasa swept through the northern Philippines and Taiwan, killing 14 people, before making landfall in the southern Chinese city of Yangjiang on Wednesday. The storm brought Hong Kong to a standstill from Tuesday afternoon, with authorities raising the highest typhoon signal 10 for most of Wednesday.
More than 100 people were injured in the city, while huge waves and widespread flooding submerged roads and properties. Seawater surged into the Fullerton hotel on the island’s south, shattering glass doors and flooding the lobby. The hotel said there were no injuries and services continued as normal.
By Thursday, the Hong Kong Observatory downgraded the storm to signal 3, keeping kindergartens and some schools shut as Ragasa weakened into a tropical storm and moved away.
The Airport Authority said flights began resuming at 6 a.m. local time (1000 GMT), with all three runways in use. “It is anticipated that flights will be scheduled until late tomorrow night, handling over 1,000 flights at the normal level,” the authority said, adding that operations would remain busy on Thursday and Friday.
Authorities said repair crews were working to clear over 1,000 fallen trees, fix collapsed roads, and respond to 85 cases of flooding. Ahead of the cyclone, residents stockpiled supplies, leaving supermarket shelves bare and driving up prices for fresh vegetables.
