RIYADH, March 6, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Formula One is likely to cancel the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix as regional conflict continues to affect the Gulf, according to multiple senior sources in the sport’s paddock.
The move would reduce the 2026 championship calendar from 24 scheduled races to 22, with no replacement events expected.
The Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit is scheduled for April 12, followed by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah the following weekend.
Security concerns have increased after Iranian missiles and drones targeted several cities in the region, including Manama, Doha and locations in Saudi Arabia, while major airports remain closed or operating at limited capacity.
Logistical constraints make rescheduling the races later in the year difficult. High summer temperatures in the Gulf and the absence of clear calendar slots limit options for alternative dates.
Formula One also aims to maintain its traditional August break and avoid adding additional pressure on teams during an already demanding season.
Several circuits — including Imola in Italy, Le Castellet in France, Portimão in Portugal and Istanbul Park in Turkey — have been mentioned in media reports as potential replacement venues. However, short preparation timelines and commercial considerations complicate any possible relocation.
A reduced calendar would still meet Formula One’s commercial obligations, even though it would likely reduce overall revenues.
The Bahrain Grand Prix was previously cancelled in 2011 due to unrest in the kingdom and was not rescheduled.
Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem have indicated that safety considerations will guide any final decision. Meetings between teams and organizers are expected in the coming days as the situation continues to evolve.
