Fire Erupts at Kuwait Power and Desalination Plant After Iranian Attack

KUWAIT CITY, July 17, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — A fire broke out at a power generation and water desalination plant in Kuwait following an Iranian attack on Friday morning, damaging electrical generation units and prompting authorities to urge residents to conserve electricity.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the fire had been extinguished.
The ministry did not identify the affected plant or provide details about the extent of the damage.
The government asked residents to reduce electricity consumption to “directly support the electrical grid” and help technical teams “preserve the continuity of electrical services.”
The appeal comes as temperatures in Kuwait are forecast to reach 46°C, or 115°F, on Friday.
Kuwait has faced repeated Iranian attacks since hostilities between Tehran and Washington resumed earlier in July. Its power and desalination infrastructure was also targeted in April.
Desalination supplies approximately 90% of Kuwait’s freshwater needs, making the facilities critical to the country’s water and electricity systems.
Gulf countries rely heavily on desalination, which converts seawater into drinking water. It provides around 90% of freshwater in Oman, 85% in Bahrain and approximately 70% in Saudi Arabia.
