NICOSIA, June 8 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — The European Union imposed sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities over threats to freedom of maritime traffic, Reuters reported.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the measure during an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Cyprus.

The meeting focused on the war in Ukraine and maritime security.

No further details on the sanctioned individuals and entities were immediately provided.

The EU has imposed sanctions on Iran for years, including travel bans and asset freezes targeting senior officials and entities over human rights violations, nuclear activities and military support for Russia.

In January, the EU designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization.

In March, the EU listed Iranian officials over human rights violations.

Diplomats said in April that the EU would expand the criteria for Iran sanctions to include those responsible for blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
