BRUSSELS, July 13, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — The European Union is preparing restrictions on children’s access to social media platforms across its 27 member states, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced.
The European Commission is developing recommendations and a legislative proposal based on a phased system that would adjust access according to a child’s age.
The measures are expected to be adopted after the summer and formally presented in September.
Under the planned framework, children younger than 13 would be permitted to use social media only for limited periods and under the supervision of a parent or teacher. Restrictions would gradually be reduced for older age groups.
The proposed safeguards would extend beyond traditional social media networks to cover digital services considered unsuitable or potentially addictive for children.
These services would fall under a broader regulatory category described as “Social Media Plus.”
The planned measures are intended to create a safer digital environment for minors, encourage balanced technology use and reduce potential harm associated with online platforms.
The initiative follows similar child-protection efforts in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and China.
