Dresden Evacuates City Centre After Discovery of WWII Bomb

Riyadh, March 11, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Authorities in Dresden began evacuating large parts of the city center Wednesday after the discovery of an unexploded British World War II bomb, according to reports.

The 250-kilogram (551-pound) explosive device was found near the site of the former Carola Bridge, which collapsed into the Elbe River in 2024.

Local authorities said the evacuation is the largest carried out in Dresden for such an incident, affecting around 18,000 residents, tourists and commuters.

Officials said large parts of the city’s historic center will be cordoned off, including several major landmarks such as the Frauenkirche Dresden, the Dresden Residenzschloss and the Semperoper.

Bomb disposal teams are expected to carry out operations to safely remove the device.
