RIYADH, June 28 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Bahrain said Iran targeted it with ballistic missiles and drones on Sunday, calling the attack a dangerous escalation.
Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry said the attack showed what it described as a deliberate policy and systematic pattern of repeated aggression against Bahrain’s sovereignty and the security of its citizens and residents.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said earlier it had targeted U.S. facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian sites on Saturday.
Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, had activated sirens several times early Sunday and told residents to move to safe places.
The Foreign Ministry said the attacks constituted a threat to all Gulf Cooperation Council states, citing the joint defense agreement among Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Bahrain’s Defense Force said its air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed a number of the Iranian aerial attacks.
It urged residents not to approach debris or suspicious objects that may be found after the attack.
The Defense Force said all branches of Bahrain’s armed forces were at the highest level of alert.
