Al-Khobar turns traffic circles into record of Saudi history

AL-KHOBAR, July 29 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Roundabouts and public squares across Al-Khobar are taking on a second role beyond managing traffic, using architecture and public art to trace Saudi Arabia’s history and changing urban identity.
Among the largest is the Vision 2030 Roundabout on Al-Khobar Corniche. Spanning 11,300 square metres, the installation comprises 84 units forming images of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saudi engineers and supervisors used modern technology to deliver the project.
Another roundabout presents the unification of the Kingdom across 10 mural panels covering more than 2,100 square metres. The panels depict milestones from the life of King Abdulaziz and incorporate his seal and signature.
At the southern Corniche, Abeyah Square references the horse that accompanied King Abdulaziz during the unification campaign. A nearby space-themed square uses a black surface, stars and constellations to create a contrasting contemporary design.
Visitors arriving at the Corniche are also met by a unification-themed monument displaying the Islamic declaration of faith alongside the Saudi emblem of two crossed swords and a palm tree.
The installations form part of Al-Khobar’s wider urban development. The city ranked 61st globally in the International Institute for Management Development’s 2025 Smart City Index.
