UNESCO AI ethics forum in Riyadh calls for stronger global governance cooperation
RIYADH, September 15, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — International officials and experts called for stronger cooperation and practical frameworks for ethical artificial intelligence governance as the first day of UNESCO’s global AI ethics forum concluded in Riyadh on Tuesday, SPA reported.
The fourth UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence brought together ministers from member states, senior officials, researchers, experts and policymakers to discuss how governments and international institutions can guide the development and use of AI.
Sessions focused on AI governance, multilateralism and diplomacy, regional cooperation and ways to turn international dialogue into implementation.
Participants examined how countries could build broader agreement on the principles and ethical frameworks governing AI technologies. They also discussed how international cooperation could support effective governance systems as the technology develops.
A session titled “Five Years of the Recommendation: Where We Are, Where We Go Next” reviewed developments since UNESCO adopted its Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and considered the next stages of its implementation.
Financing and partnerships were also on the agenda. Panel discussions highlighted the need to mobilize resources and build partnerships for ethical AI governance initiatives designed to serve people and society.
Another session examined women’s role in shaping responsible AI, including ways to expand their participation and support their involvement in responsible innovation.
The first day also included the National AI Index awards, which recognized eight Saudi government entities for their performance in the index’s first assessment cycle.
The Ministry of Energy was honored in the “Excellence” category, while seven other entities received recognition in the “Empowerment” category.
