South Korea to Summon Iranian Ambassador Over Hormuz Vessel Explosion

SEOUL, May 27 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — South Korea will summon Iran’s ambassador to Seoul over Tehran’s suspected involvement in an explosion that hit a South Korean-linked vessel in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.

South Korea’s foreign ministry said the protest follows an investigation into the explosion and fire that occurred on the vessel in the critical waterway in early May.

First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo said analysis of projectile debris indicated the vessel was likely struck twice by Iran’s Noor series anti-ship missiles. Only one of the missiles detonated.

Park said it was “very difficult” to determine whether the incident was an intentional attack.

The Panama-flagged ship was carrying 24 crew members, including six South Koreans, and was docked near the United Arab Emirates side of the strait before the explosion.

Park said the missile body was the same light blue colour as Iran’s Noor series anti-ship missile, and that some parts contained engravings believed to be linked to an Iranian manufacturer.

U.S. President Donald Trump said at the time that Iran had “taken some shots” at the vessel. Tehran rejected the allegation.

Iran has not issued an immediate response to the latest investigation findings. Its embassy in South Korea previously denied involvement in the explosion.
