Saudi Arabia Introduces AI Media Guidelines to Address Deepfakes and Misinformation

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, November 6 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Saudi Arabia has introduced national guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in media production, requiring disclosure of AI-generated content and human verification of information as authorities seek to address misinformation, deepfakes and privacy risks.
The AI Principles in Media document sets out eight principles covering transparency, factual accuracy, privacy, misleading content, accountability, impartiality, public awareness and regulatory compliance, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The guidelines call for clear identification of AI-assisted material through watermarks, notices or metadata labels, particularly in news reporting and content involving matters of public interest.
They also caution media organisations and content creators against relying on generative AI as an authoritative source of factual information, requiring human oversight to verify automated outputs and assess potential bias.
The framework addresses the use of synthetic images, video, audio and text, as well as the protection of intellectual property and personal information throughout the production process.
The measures follow growing international concern over the reliability of AI-generated material. UNESCO has called for stronger media and digital literacy to help audiences identify synthetic content and assess the credibility of information.
Saudi Arabia's Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), working with the General Authority of Media Regulation, also organised the AI for Impact forum, attended by more than 250 media professionals, digital influencers and content creators.
The forum examined the ethical and practical implications of artificial intelligence across media operations, from research and scriptwriting to production, editing and audience analysis.
A specialised training initiative, Impact Creators, was launched during the event to provide instruction in content verification, responsible AI use and professional production standards.
The guidelines establish a national framework for integrating artificial intelligence into Saudi Arabia's media sector while maintaining editorial accountability and protecting audiences from deceptive or misleading content.
