OSLO, June 17 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has undergone a successful lung transplant and will remain in hospital for several weeks as she begins recovery, Reuters reported, citing doctors at Oslo University Hospital.
The 52-year-old wife of Crown Prince Haakon, heir to the Norwegian throne, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.
The chronic disease causes scarring in the lungs and reduces oxygen uptake.
Oslo University Hospital said the transplant had so far been successful, according to a statement provided by the palace.
Professor Are Holm said the Crown Princess would remain in hospital for several weeks, like all newly transplanted patients.
He said the period would be used to adjust medication, manage possible complications and begin physical rehabilitation.
The palace said Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit thanked the public for messages of support.
The next update on her condition is expected after she is discharged.
Oslo University Hospital said earlier this month that Mette-Marit had been placed on a waiting list for a lung transplant after a sharp deterioration in her health.
Hospital officials have stressed that members of Norway’s royal family receive no preferential treatment in the allocation of organs.
Around 30 to 35 lung transplants are performed in Norway each year.
The surgery comes during a difficult period for Norway’s royal family, after Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, was convicted of rape and domestic violence and sentenced to four years in prison. His lawyer has said he plans to appeal.
Support for Norway’s monarchy has declined this year amid several controversies, according to opinion polls cited by Reuters.
