ROME, April 4 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday her two-day Gulf mission was aimed at showing solidarity with countries facing Iranian attacks while protecting Italy’s security and energy interests, as she concluded visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

In a video message released by her office, Meloni said Italy needed to be present “in the places where a fundamental part of our security is being decided, and also our economic future,” linking instability in the Gulf to higher energy prices and pressure on businesses and households.

Reuters reported that the trip was designed to support Gulf partners and shore up Italy’s energy security as conflict-related disruption in the region pushed up fuel concerns. Italy gets around 10% of its natural gas from Qatar, while the Gulf supplies a significant share of its oil needs.

Meloni, who began the unannounced trip in Saudi Arabia on Friday before traveling to Qatar and the UAE, also discussed ending the regional conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to accounts of the visit carried by AP. Her office said talks in the UAE covered additional investment in energy, defence and security, while in Qatar she pledged Italian support to help restore damaged energy infrastructure.
