Macron discusses regional escalation in calls with Syrian and Lebanese leaders

RIYADH, March 7, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — French President Emmanuel Macron held phone calls with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss the escalating conflict in the region, according to statements released on Friday.
During his call with Al-Sharaa, the two leaders emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and containing the regional escalation to safeguard stability.
They also condemned Iranian attacks targeting several countries in the region and warned of the risks posed by further military escalation.
According to the Syrian presidency, Al-Sharaa told Macron that the recent deployment of Syrian troops along the Syrian-Lebanese border constituted defensive reinforcements aimed at securing the border and preventing weapons smuggling.
Macron also spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, reaffirming that Lebanon’s territorial integrity must be respected.
The French president also condemned an attack on a United Nations position in Lebanon, emphasizing the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in maintaining stability in southern Lebanon.
