Lionel Messi Retires from International Football After 207 Argentina Appearances
BUENOS AIRES, September 1, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, ending a historic Argentina career spanning more than two decades.
The 39-year-old leaves as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer, having registered 125 goals in 207 matches since making his senior debut in 2005.
Messi captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and helped the national team win the Copa América in 2021 and 2024. He also featured in the World Cup finals of 2014 and 2026.
Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat by Spain in the 2026 final proved to be his final international appearance.
“It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deep down — but I understand that the time has come,” Messi wrote in his retirement statement.
He said he had always given everything for the Argentina jersey and leaves with pride in the moments created alongside his teammates. Messi also pointed to the emergence of younger players who deserve an opportunity with the national team.
Messi revealed that he wrote the statement on July 21, two days after the World Cup final. The death of his father, Jorge, in August reinforced his belief that it was the right time to publish it and end his international career.
Jorge Messi, who had played a central role in his son’s career and served as his representative for several years, died aged 68 in Rosario following a long illness.
Messi will continue playing club football with Inter Miami, where his contract runs through 2028. He recently scored four goals and provided an assist as the club defeated CF Montréal 7-1 in Major League Soccer.
