Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council Announces Launch of Irthi Museum in Sharjah

SHARJAH, August 10 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council announced the launch of Irthi Museum in Sharjah, describing it as the region’s first museum dedicated to contemporary craft.
The museum will operate as a permanent cultural institution focused on preserving, documenting and presenting the evolution of contemporary craft in the UAE and the wider region. Its planned work also includes research, education, design innovation, collection development and public engagement.
The launch marks the culmination of Irthi’s 10-year effort to revive Emirati crafts, support artisans and strengthen the presence of traditional practices within the cultural and creative landscape.
“The Irthi Museum stands as a living bridge between heritage techniques and contemporary expressions — a promise to keep our rich craft practices intact and carry them forward into the future. It is a celebration of craft not as a preserved relic, but as a vibrant, evolving legacy,” said Reem Bin Karam, director-general of Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council.
Located in Sharjah Creative Quarter, the museum forms part of a group of specialised cultural and creative institutions. It is intended to create opportunities for artisans and support the transfer of craft knowledge and expertise to future generations.
The institution also builds on Sharjah’s cultural heritage preservation work and its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
