Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Closes Strait of Hormuz, Warns of Strikes on Violating Vessels

RIYADH, April 19 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — The navy of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps declared the Strait of Hormuz fully closed Saturday, warning that any vessel violating the closure would be targeted, state media reported.

The navy said it extended a closure to a corridor it had previously designated for safe passage through the strategic waterway, conditioning any reopening on the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports and ships.

On Friday, Iran had said vessels could transit the strait in coordination with Iranian authorities against payment of a toll. The late Saturday statement reversed that position entirely.

Iran has characterized the U.S. blockade as a violation of a ceasefire between the two countries.

Two vessels were attacked earlier Saturday — one in the Strait of Hormuz and one off Oman's coast — at least one of them by Iranian gunboats.
