RIYADH, August 18 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Iran’s parliament speaker and lead negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will travel to Iraq on Wednesday at the head of a “high level parliamentary delegation,” Iranian state media reported.
The visit follows the expiration on Monday of the framework diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran. The agreement had been intended to end the war, but no resolution to the conflict has been announced.
Ghalibaf has served as lead negotiator during several rounds of talks held since the United States and Israel launched the war against Iran in February.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said the delegation would hold talks with senior Iraqi officials on “strengthening bilateral relations, border security, counterterrorism efforts, expanding economic cooperation, and advancing the implementation of agreements between the two countries,”
The meetings will also examine “joint initiatives to promote stability and security across West Asia.”
The visit comes amid a separate dispute involving Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani accused Iran on Monday of carrying out drone attacks against his office and the residence of the head of the Kurdish intelligence agency Parastin.
Iran denied the allegation and suggested the incident may have been a “false flag” operation.
