RIYADH, May 7 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Iran’s embassy in South Korea said on Thursday it “firmly rejects” any claims regarding the involvement of Iranian armed forces in damage to a South Korean – linked vessel at the Strait of Hormuz, while acknowledging that navigation conditions in the waterway have been disrupted by the ongoing conflict.
The embassy said Tehran has repeatedly emphasized since the start of the war with the United States and Israel that the strait is, in its words, “an inseparable parts of its defensive geography in confronting aggressors and their supporters”, adding that navigation conditions have been “affected by the evolving security situation”.
An explosion and fire occurred earlier this week aboard a South Korean – linked Panama – flagged vessel near the strait, close to the United Arab Emirates, according to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry. The ship was carrying 24 crew members, including six South Koreans. No casualties were reported.
U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had “taken some shots” at the vessel.
Soth Korea had been evaluating whether to join U.S. efforts to escort merchant ships through the strait, but the American escort initiative – dubbed “Project Freedom” – has since been paused.
