EAST RUTHERFORD, July 19, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — Substitute Ferran Torres scored in extra time as Spain defeated 10-man defending champions Argentina 1-0 on Sunday to claim their second World Cup title.

Torres broke the deadlock early in the second half of extra time, converting a rebound to crown the European champions as world champions.

Argentina were reduced to 10 players when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card during second-half stoppage time. The South American side struggled in attack, failing to register a shot on or off target for 115 minutes.

The victory made Spain’s 65-year-old coach Luis de la Fuente the oldest manager to win the World Cup.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi, 39, became only the second player to appear in three World Cup finals and the oldest outfield player to feature in the tournament’s title match.
