Italy Plans Personalized Number Plates at €600 for Cars

October 29 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Italy plans to let motorists personalize their vehicle number plates, charging about €600 for cars and €360 for motorcycles under a measure intended to raise government revenue.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the initiative on Wednesday while presenting the 2027 budget law, the last before a general election due next year.

Meloni described it as a lighter addition to the budget and suggested Italian motorists would bring creativity to their choices. The fees are set out in a decree.

Italy currently uses a standard plate format of two letters, three numbers and two letters. Personalized plates are already available in countries including the United States and Britain.

Some taxi drivers welcomed the proposal, saying distinctive plates could help passengers identify legitimate operators and distinguish them from unauthorized services.

The announcement also prompted jokes and memes on social media, alongside concerns that personalized combinations could be used for insults or profanity.

Centre-left opposition parties criticized the initiative as a distraction from economic issues they said the budget had failed to address.
