Los Angeles, February 19, 2026 (SABN) – Eric Dane, the American actor best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, died Thursday at the age of 53, his family confirmed.
Dane had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2025. In a family statement, they said Dane spent his final days surrounded by friends, his wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The statement highlighted Dane’s advocacy for ALS awareness and research.
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane began his acting career in the 1990s with television appearances on shows including Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children. He had a recurring role on Gideon’s Crossing in 2000 and made his film debut the same year in The Basket.
Dane appeared in multiple films in the early 2000s, including Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, Sol Goode, Feast, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Marley & Me. He starred in Open Water 2 and appeared in Charmed for two seasons.
He joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2005 as Dr. Mark Sloan, a role that became a regular part of the series until 2012, with brief returns in 2013 and 2024. Dane also appeared in the A&E film Wedding Wars, the theatrical film Valentine’s Day, and the TNT series The Last Ship (2014–2019).
In 2019, he began playing Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, appearing in 12 episodes across the first two seasons, and reprised the role for the third season. His later work included films such as Borderline, Into the Beautiful, and Family Secrets, as well as television series including Wireless, Countdown, and Kabul.
Following his ALS diagnosis, Dane actively worked with the charity I Am ALS on fundraising and legislation.
He is survived by his two daughters.
