Araghchi Rejects Trump Economic Pressure Threat, Warns of ‘Further Defeat’

RIYADH, August 20 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected President Donald Trump’s threat of “crushing” economic pressure against Iran, calling the announced campaign a diversion and predicting that it would produce another US failure.
“The so-called “Economic D-Day” is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” Araghchi wrote on X.
US federal debt reached a record $40 trillion on Tuesday, according to the US Treasury Department.
The milestone leaves the United States spending more on interest payments than on national defense and 50% more than on programs for children, CNN reported.
“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat – and enmity of Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens global economy and sovereignty worldwide,” Araghchi added.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi separately described US decision-making as based on “flawed calculations.”
“Every time they try to cover up one miscalculation, they end up setting themselves up for an even greater failure,” Gharibabadi wrote on X.
Gharibabadi asserted that the war had not delivered the outcome sought by the United States, saying that “now they’ve given their next failure a new name: ‘economic war.’”
The Iranian statements followed Trump’s announcement of a new economic campaign intended to increase pressure on Tehran. Details of the measures have not been disclosed.
Global oil prices have remained elevated since the United States and Israel went to war against Iran in February and the Strait of Hormuz was closed.
Concerns about a potential fuel supply crisis are increasing while global reserves continue to decline.
