RIYADH, April 3, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - The U.S. military launched a search-and-rescue operation on Friday after Iranian state media said an American fighter jet went down over southwestern Iran and that at least one crew member ejected. Reuters separately reported, citing a U.S. official, that a U.S. fighter jet had been shot down over Iran and that a search was underway for the crew.
Israel is helping the United States in the rescue effort, according to an Israeli military officer briefed on the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a U.S. announcement. Social media footage showed American drones, aircraft and helicopters flying over the mountainous area where the Iranian channel said at least one pilot had bailed out.
If confirmed, it would mark the first time the United States has lost an aircraft in Iranian territory during the nearly five-week war. It was not immediately clear whether the jet was shot down or crashed, and the number of crew on board was not known.
The White House, the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
