ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, June 17 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that the ceasefire agreement reached with Iran was not final and that Washington could resume military action if Tehran failed to comply, Reuters reported.
Trump described the arrangement as a memorandum of understanding during remarks at the Group of Seven summit in France.
“If I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them,” Trump told reporters.
The U.S.-Iran agreement is expected to launch negotiations toward a final settlement to end the war, which has killed more than 7,000 people, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, according to Reuters.
G7 leaders welcomed the interim deal and called for negotiations to address threats posed by Iran in the region and ensure that Tehran never obtains a nuclear weapon.
The leaders also called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
The summit gave Trump an opportunity to present the agreement to allies Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
G7 leaders expressed readiness to contribute to implementing the accord, including through a British- and French-led coalition expected to help secure shipping once the Strait of Hormuz reopens.
The memorandum, which has not yet been made public, extends a ceasefire announced in April by another 60 days to allow negotiations on a permanent truce.
Iran maintains that any ceasefire must also end hostilities in Lebanon and lead to an Israeli withdrawal.
Israel, which was not part of the U.S.-Iran negotiations, has stated that it will not withdraw and reserves the right to use military force.
The issue has opened a rift between Washington and Israel, with Trump publicly criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Lebanon.
Oil prices fell again on Wednesday on prospects for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent crude futures below $80.
