WASHINGTON, May 20 — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the United States could carry out further strikes against Iran if no agreement is reached over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said during a commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. “We hit them very hard. We may have to hit them even harder – but maybe not.”

Trump said the United States would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and added that negotiations with Tehran were in their final stages.

“The only question is, do we go and finish it up? Are they going to be signing a document? Let’s see what happens,” Trump said.

Trump announced a ceasefire between the United States and Iran six weeks ago and has since warned of additional military action unless Tehran agrees to a deal on its nuclear programme.
