RIYADH, June 14 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that an agreement with Iran was scheduled to be signed on Sunday, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would open to all traffic immediately after the signing.
Trump wrote that he hoped the process would move quickly and smoothly, while warning that the United States had what he called “the ultimate alternative” if it did not.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a key mediator in the talks, indicated that the sides were closer to a peace agreement than before and that the terms could be finalized within 24 hours.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps rejected Trump’s timeline and denied that Tehran would sign an agreement with the United States on Sunday.
The IRGC described Trump’s announcement as a test for Iran’s negotiating team and noted that Iranian negotiators had stated the memorandum had not yet been finalized.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also rejected a Sunday signing, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency.
Baghaei noted that an agreement in the coming days was not ruled out, while calling for caution over statements on the process.
